ABSTRACT

   Typhoid fever (TF) is an acute systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B. It is transmitted by the fecal oral route mainly via contaminated food and water. The developing countries have high rate of morbidity and mortality due to Typhoid fever, epidemics take place in developed world also. There are increased incidences of multi drug resistant in S. typhi strains that has further complicated its management and only a few antibiotics are now effective in treatment of typhoid. We report that the aqueous extracts of fruit peel Citrus sinensis (L.) confer anti typhoid activity against Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B respectively on comparison with ciprofloxacin.

ABSTRACT
  
 
Andrographis paniculata (Acanthaceae), a potential medicinal plant, distributed in waste lands, open forests in India. The plant parts were used by adivasis and other local communities for several human ailments. A. paniculata is used in the treatment of typhoid, snake bite, scorpion sting, malaria and cancer. The methanol and aqueous extracts were evaluated for its anthelmintic activity against adult earth worms (Phertima prosthuma). Three concentrations (25, 50, 75mg/ml) of each extract were studied, which involved the determination of time of paralysis and time of death of the test worms. It was found that both the extracts exhibited significant anthelmintic activity. Albendazole in same concentration as that of extract was used as standard reference and distilled water as control.
