Typhoid fever (TF) is an acute systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B. It is transmitted by the fecal oral route mainly via contaminated food and water. The developing countries have high rate of morbidity and mortality due to Typhoid fever, epidemics take place in developed world also. There are increased incidences of multi drug resistant in S. typhi strains that has further complicated its management and only a few antibiotics are now effective in treatment of typhoid. We report that the aqueous extracts of fruit peel Citrus sinensis (L.) confer anti typhoid activity against Salmonella Typhi, Salmonella Para Typhi A and Salmonella Para Typhi B respectively on comparison with ciprofloxacin.

In the present study we evaluate the antioxidant and antidiabetic potential of ethanolic extract of Swietenia mahagoni seeds. Phenolic compounds of plant origin are of great interest due to their antioxidant property and serves as essential part of human diet. The ethanolic extract of Swietenia mahagoni seeds showed DPPH radical scavenging activity 04.8, 06.74, 07.67 09.18 and 17.25 % at respective concentrations of 10, 50, 100, 250 and 400 µg/ml. The extract also showed significant hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of 25.00, 33.52, 40.45, 50.57 and 88.03 % at respective concentrations. The extract significantly inhibited nitric oxide radical and ferric reducing power in a concentration dependent manner. All the results were compared with that of standard drug Butylated Hydroxyl Anisole (BHA). The total phenolic content of seeds extract was found to be 1µg/mg of catechol equivalent when measured by Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The extract showed relatively better antidiabetic activity of 72.53, 70.33 and 70.33% with respective concentration of 2, 20 and 200µg/ml when measured by amylase inhibition assay. This observation supports the use of Swietenia mahagoni seeds as a natural antioxidant and antidiabetic agent.
